Drive Safe, the organization responsible for speed cameras across Greater Manchester, has denied reports that motorists are facing a speed cameralottery as less than half of cameras are not working.

Drive Safe claimed that every speed cameras throughout Greater Manchester is fully operational.

The organization responded to a report prepared by consumer watchdog Which?. In the report, the consumer watchdog claims that less than half of the nation's speed cameras are working at any one time. The report also claims that Lancashire has 287 fixed speed cameras, but less than 30 of them are primed to capture pictures at any one time.

Karen Delaney, communications manager at Drive Safe, said that Specific Road Safety Revenue Grant was hacked by 27 per cent, but the organization was working to accommodate that cut without compromising on safety camera activity.

Commenting on the topic, Delaney added, "Safety cameras have beeninstrumental in helping to reduce the number of casualties on Greater Manchester's roads."

Motorists' chances of being caught by a speed camera vary from county to county.

Around 6,000 speed cameras have triggered an estimated £100 million in fines since 1992.
